"My creative process is equal parts searching, wandering, stumbling, cursing, embracing, and coming home."
Stroke by lyrical stroke, Elizabeth (superhero name Betty) Hatchett’s watercolor paintings are her visual response to an inner stirring that refuses to hush. Be it poetry (see Mary Oliver’s “Wild Geese”), song lyrics (Leonard Cohen’s “Anthem”) or her own nostalgic memories of growing up on Florida’s Gulf Coast, the magic behind Betty’s artistry is her quest to follow instinct and embrace mistakes, rather than chase perfection. With the natural world as her muse, pretty much every piece that succeeds involves a moment when she’s sure they have failed. But, just as in life, those mistakes, turned on their side, often lead the way to the resolution.< less
