about Hide and Tallow

“I would describe my leather pieces as, in a word, honest. I manipulate raw materials just enough to serve their function. Each item takes countless processes, but, in the end, I strive to make each item functional and beautiful. It is important to me that my work holds up.”

For Ty, creative inspiration comes a little bit from his past, a little bit from his present. “My company represents my appreciation for California,” he says, “It’s a place that is as much a state of mind as it is a place on the map.” He harkens back to when California was still a part of Mexico, when their whole economy thrived on the sale of cow hides and tallow. Flash forward to present day where Ty resides in Cambria and, well, things haven’t changed much. At least for Ty. On his way to work, he drives by one of the oldest free-range cattle ranches in the state. So it felt only natural for his budding love of working with leather to fit with that long line of state and cultural history. After college (studying history, naturally) he spent a lot of time wanting to pursue a craft that let him use his hands and his creative heart. show more
