about Indigo & Snow

“I love the process of shibori—but the very best part for me is removing the binding and seeing the fabric fresh from the dye bath. I love seeing the designs as I unfold the fabric—it feels like magic every time.”

Annabella uses a contemporary approach to the traditional Japanese technique called shibori to create evocative, nuanced patterns on fabric in lovely tones of indigo (“imagine the depth of blue in a blueberry or a turbulent sea”). Shibori is an ancient Japanese form of dyeing that involves, folding, stitching, binding, compressing and twisting the fabric just so, then using natural dyes and indigo to color the fabric in the areas that aren’t compressed. She loves that there’s a precision about shibori but also a fluid, spontaneous quality. And as a 20-year organic gardener who is also schooled in environmental studies, she’s working all of this magic on upcycled fabrics and organic cottons to boot. Sugoi, ni-kai!
