Jay Wiese Pottery

Stoneware designer
Gainesville, FL

“There’s a kind of magic to throwing that hasn’t lost its appeal to me even after 20 years.”

Jay began throwing pottery a good 20 years ago, in 1991, and he oh-so modestly says it has taken him that long to create functional works of art he wants to put in your hands. His primary piece of equipment is a kickwheel, a pottery wheel operated by foot rather than a motor, giving his pieces a subtle irregularity. Jay says his work harkens back to American stoneware pottery from the 18th and 19th century, when simple, utilitarian shapes reigned supreme and there was a soft, relaxed quality to the final product. Dream of the 1890s? It’s alive and well with this designer.
