Richard Altenhofen

Sonoran Desert Craftsman
Ahwatukee, AZ

“What really attracts me to woodturning is that it enables me to take wood that would otherwise end up in a landfill and turn it into a functional thing of beauty.”

As a Portland native, superior woodworking is engrained in Richard's brain. After a move to the Sonoran Desert, the woodworker was determined not to let a change of scenery stop him and he quickly adapted to the desert’s local resources for crafting handmade goods. With practicality as his main goal, he enjoys making containers that can be used for holding and hiding. He's combined this with a passion for all things culinary to make solid wood garlic keepers and other containers for kitchen essentials. The only thing that could stop Richard is a shortage of wood – but he'd probably still figure something out.
