Professional eavesdroppers and true craftspeople, Caleb and Christie fell into a love affair with letterpress quite by accident. They’d both been working artists for 10 years, but doing a neighbor’s wedding invitations gave them a chance to study under a real live Letterpressing legend. Unlike many letterpressers, they don’t use a computer for any part of the process. First they take their inspiration from bits of pop culture and overheard conversations. Then they jot down drafts in a notebook, hand-cut woodblocks themselves and hand-set all of the type before giving their ancient old Vandercock press a pull. Working with 100-year-old equipment is not without its challenges. There are the effects of the cold, the heat, the humidity—and there’s no undo button to hit.< less
