“Everything is done by hand—making the object, glazing it and then adding the gold leaf details. A lot of me goes into each and every piece.
Emily is a woman who is happiest with clay under her nails and dust on her face. But she wasn’t always attached to the wheel. While she was in art school, Emily made a little trio of hanging flower structures—nothing to it. Her professor Yoshi came by and said, “Hey, that’s pretty good.” But his assistant turned to Emily with wide eyes and said, “Emily, he NEVER says that. You should change your major!” That afternoon she marched into her advisor’s office and made the fated switch to ceramics. Now she’s developed her own style of elegant, useful objects with metallic leaf details using a shimpo wheel that very professor gave her. Since he used wheel for 30 years, there’s a little skin-prickling feeling of inspiration every time she sits down at it. To get dirty and happy.< less
