The Scoop: Atlanta’s historic fine art supply and gift store. Binders provides for every creative need -- from fine paper/stationery and paints to custom framing and art classes. They also happen to have some pretty deep ties to our fair city. And, on that note, are you ready for our Binders Art History lesson?

The Full Story:

Chapter 1: The Family Frame

Binders’ name doesn’t come from the fact that an art store just happens to sell notebooks; it’s a tribute to the Binders family who started their small gift and framing store here in the early 1900s. In 1955, Moe and Joe Krinsky (two brothers whose names should sound familiar if you’ve ever enjoyed a pitcher of Pabst in Virginia-Highland) bought the retail store from the Binders family and, after the suggestion from a salesman, decided to add paint supplies. From there, the Atlanta art store was born and, today, Howard Krinsky (Moe’s youngest son) still runs this joint alongside his business partner Jay. The Moe & Joe dynasty lives on.

Chapter 2: From Downtown to Disco

The original Binders was located downtown and the store has moved around quite a bit since. Today you’ll find it tucked in a downstairs space behind “Disco Kroger” in Buckhead, in the exact space where the Limelight dance club used to be (hence the affectionate nickname for the 24-Hour grocery). Another fun history fact: one of Binders’ longtime employees actually met her husband at Limelight back in the day. More specifically, she says they set eyes on each other just near custom framing (err, the dance floor) and it's been sweet love ever since. If only these art walls could talk, the colorful stories they’d have to share.

Chapter 3: Binders Today

Maintaining Atlanta’s finest selection of art supplies, Howard, Jay, and the Binders gang have done their part to support the local art scene, giving back to the many portfolio schools and community groups that shop with them. If you’re looking to learn more from Binders, there’s plenty of inspiring opportunities for that in their art classes (see website calendar). And then you too can consider yourself part of the Binders Art history.
