The Scoop: ‘Bone’ appetit at this Oakhurst ‘Bark’ery. (Get it? Get it?! Okay fine, enough dog puns) Taj Mahound is a specialty bakery for your four-legged friends. Cookies, cakes, and all-natural treats are made in-house so you can spoil your pet any time of the year. Classes and special events are available here as well -- perfect for an upcoming birthday parties (human or canine).

Full story: Step inside the bakery, set your eyes on one the many mouth-watering treats, proceed to pawing and licking the display case until someone behind the counter comes to help to you.

At least that’s what Taj Mahound’s best customers tend to do. And why wouldn’t they? Take one look at these hand-decorated, freshly-baked cookies and cakes -- all made with natural, restaurant-quality ingredients -- and you might wonder if they’re just as suitable for human consumption.

“Actually, people COULD eat them,” Krista, co-owner of Taj Mahound, tells me. In fact, one of her favorite (two-legged) customers comes in quite often to buy two cakes -- one for her pooch and one for her husband Dan who just happens to love the taste. Hey, no judgement here... although Krista warns that the treats “aren’t as sweet as they look”; they’re not made with sugars or sweeteners, are extra hard from the ‘slow and low’ baking process (that way, they don’t go bad), and... that frosting that looks like chocolate? It’s actually carob.

Over a thousand treats are made here per week, ranging in price from $1 to $6. In the case this month, you’ll find plenty of Valentine-themed cookies with cutesy frosted messages like “Spoiled rotten” and “You’re my bitch”. There’s also the popular “Pubst” Blue Ribbon cookies, shaped and decorated like everyone’s favorite hipster beer. Obviously, Krista and Jake have a sense of humor with their doggie goods -- and the fun is passed along to their customers’ favorite pets.

Speaking of canine fun, you also have the option of going all-out in efforts to spoil your mutt; Taj Mahound does doggie birthday parties -- rent their space for two hours and get a custom cake and baking lessons for curious kids. Adults are welcome too, of course, and are free to bring such adult beverages as beer and wine. And if you’re really into this whole dog-baking thing, come for one of Taj Mahound’s new cookie decorating classes; they’re for people, of course. Sorry pups -- while you more than deserve these Taj Mahound treats, you unfortunately lack the opposable thumbs required to make them.
