The Scoop: Artful coffee, espresso drinks, local baked goods, and lots of passionate baristas that Bon Appetit magazine recently named as one of their top ten boutique coffee shops in the country. It’s what makes up Octane’s second location. Right next to Everybody’s Pizza in the Emory Village, you’ll find a group who collectively knows more about the art of coffee-making than possibly anyone in this city.

Full Story: A guy walks into a coffee bar and places his just-finished cup on the counter. He points down to it and says, “Now THAT was the best macchiato I’ve ever had.”

Okay, so that wasn’t much of a punchline. But seriously folks -- like a fly on the wall with a laptop, I witnessed this customer rave to the baristas: “I mean, I’ve been a macchiato connoisseur for years, and that -- THAT RIGHT THERE -- was definitely the best I can remember.” He walked out, actually shaking his head in disbelief. And as he did, baristas Dustin and Hilary were high-fiving behind the counter. It could’ve been staged for my purposes, but it wasn’t; the baristas here get this kind of praise all the time.

Owner Tony and his whole Octane crew take the art of coffee-making very seriously. So serious, in fact, that three of them will be be competing in the Southeast Regional Barista Competition this month. (You can come in and try their competition espresso -- each has their respective blend available during their shift.) And if you really want them to prove their passion? Just ask anyone behind the counter to wax poetic about the nuances of each single origin coffee here on the menu.

This Emory location is decidedly smaller (read: cozier) than the one on the Westside, but it also includes a pretty sweet heated patio with extra outlets -- perfect for outdoor enjoyment once the weather is cooperative. Beyond mind-blowing coffees and macchiatos, you’ve got your choice of a carefully prepared loose leaf tea service, Holeman & Finch pastries, local organic milk from Sparkman’s Cream Valley, house-made peanut butter, jelly, and granola with yogurt. All chocolate, caramel and vanilla sauces are made in house as well.

If you’re a coffee-connoisseur of any kind, you’ll appreciate the artistry that goes into your cup at Octane; perhaps just as much as our stranger-friend did his macchiato.
