The Scoop: A fixture of Sandy Springs since 1996, Mike’s Hot Dogs built it’s success by specializing in the “Chicago Style” hot dog. And it seems owner Jeff and company have somehow managed to bring a piece of Chicago to this Sandy Springs shopping center. Mike’s menu also ventures into other styles of greasy goodness: Chili Slaw Dogs, Stew Dogs, Corn Dogs, Chicago-Style Italian Beef Sandwiches dipped in Au Jus, and... oh yeah, good ol’ hamburgers.

The Full Story: I have to admit -- this was my first experience with a Chicago Dog. Although I’d never actually seen one before, in my mind’s eye, I knew what I was missing. I always pictured piles of chili, cheese, and sloppy, yummy slaw. So imagine my surprise when Jeff here offered us a chance to try a “proper Chicago dog”. On the plate in front of me was an all-beef dog covered in... tomato? Pickle? Peppers? What the?! This was like discovering a whole new hot dog world. Which, if you’ve ever done for yourself, you realize is a pretty mind-boggling experience. According to Jeff and all the diehard Chicago dog fans in town, THIS right here -- in this cheap mustard and ketchup-colored diner -- is where Atlanta can find the best true-to-tradition Chicago-Style Dogs.

So with my new revelation, I learned THIS is what makes a hot dog a Chicago hot dog**:

Step 1: 100% All-Beef Vienna Hot Dog in a Poppyseed Bun
Step 2: Dog is topped with mustard, sweet green relish (from Chicago), fresh diced onion, tomato, and one thin-sliced dill pickle spear.
Step 3: Finally, the well-dressed dog is topped with two sport peppers and a sprinkling of celery salt.

**All ingredients are bought straight from Chi-town, and there’s no straying from that exact assembly order.

Not that I ever needed a reason to love a good hot dog, but it seems, this week, I found a brand new one at Mike’s.
