You've heard of the cocktails here, revered by libations purists as liquid gold. You may have even heard of the bartenders themselves, more knowledgeable about mixing liquors than Tom Cruise in that one movie. And in case you haven't tried the southern-inspired contemporary fare from new Chef Joseph Ward, we're here to tell you that the food and drink at this "modern watering stop" is just about the closest thing to boarding a train to culinary heaven. After all, it's not every day you get to pair a Prohibition-era cocktail with a snack bowl of fancified Cracker Jacks and one of the best burgers in town. (A bold statement, I know... but one I'm prepared to defend mightily.)

H. Harper might be best known for its 40-something strong cocktail list, a mix of the classic and the inventive (and perhaps the best Manhattan in town?). But the menu of small plates and entrees is a study in delicious simplicity. Chef Ward, formerly of Kevin Gillespie's Woodfire Grill, keeps the menu Southern-inspired, but not drenched in grease, with dishes that spotlight seasonal ingredients and time-tested techniques. Add to that the historical coolness of the building, an interior accented with chandeliers and taxidermy, and an entire chalkboard of mostly craft distillery bourbon, scotch, whiskey, and more, and you've got at least a few good reasons to make this your new cocktail-swilling, Southern food-eating home away from home.
