Owner David himself travels each year to reservations out West to hand-select each turquoise gemstone, wood-and-bone necklace, and carved silver bracelet that gleams underneath the shop's display case.Amidst Little Five's trademark bohemian culture, throughout years of the neighborhood's constant metamorphosis, stand a few business that have steadfastly weathered all of the change. Coyote Trading Company is one of those stores. For years, the shop has stood as something of a quiet oasis in the middle of an infamously not-so-quiet neighborhood. Walking inside, you might make a beeline for the hand-hewn wooden pipes, or the tiny carved animal figurines, or maybe the shelf of Native American reading material. But what Coyote Trading Company might be most well-known for? Their handcrafted jewelry, chosen by owner David himself, who travels each year to reservations out west to hand-select each turquoise gemstone, each wood-and-bone necklace, each carved silver bracelet that gleams underneath the shop's display case. From the intricately carved sterling silver handiwork of the Hopi to the no-two-alike turquoise of the Navajo, the jewelry selection represents not just an array of beautiful handmade pieces, but also the age-old crafts of Native American tribes. And it's about as far away as generic boutique jewelry as you could possibly get.
But what, exactly, drove David to open such a unique and specialized shop in between all the dive bars and vintage shops of Little Five? Simply traveling west as a salesman years ago and becoming transfixed with Native American culture, he tells me. Now, Coyote Trading Company has become not just an emporium of crafts, jewelry, and art, but also a place where passersby can simply wander in, escape the Little Five hullabaloo, have a moment of quiet, and peruse the shop's wares while talking with Geno about culture, religion, and spirituality. Not exactly the same experience you usually associate with Little Five, no?
