Thanks to the fact that Gigi's cupcake selection changes daily, there's a perfectly good excuse to visit every day of the week. They're pocket-sized little desserts, but don't be fooled: they pack a powerful punch. Also, you should probably refrain from actually putting them in your pockets (they've got boxes for that). While we Atlantans certainly love our cupcakes, the folks manning the racks at Gigi's take it to another level. Each little treat is topped with a tower of delicious frosting (buttercream or cream cheese) that will send your sweet tooth straight up to heaven faster than cake and ice cream at a kid's birthday party. Yup, if you were ever one of the kids who insisted on having a corner piece of that birthday cake, prepare to meet your match. These colorful, creative little works of sugary art are just as tasty as they look.
Walking into the shop on Hammond Drive is a little like entering a very sugary art gallery: those sweet little creations in their display cases immediately draw your attention. Perhaps it's the rainbow of colors, with flavors ranging from red velvet to midnight magic. Or maybe it's the fact that each cupcake is its own little work of art, with that buttercream frosting sitting like a crown on top and any combination of chocolate chips, sugar crystals, graham cracker crumbs, powdered sugar, nonpareils, toasted coconut... you get the picture. Some of those cupcakes looked as labor-intensive (and delicious) as some of the prettiest cakes we've seen, and you can't help but to ooh and ahh at them as soon as you see the case. And thanks to the fact that Gigi's cupcake selection changes daily, there's a perfectly good excuse to visit every day of the week.
Oh, and if you're looking for something a little different in your cupcake, take comfort in knowing that Gigi's isn't just a matter of chocolate versus vanilla. The flavor concoctions are creative and a little kooky, in a good way — the spring and summer menu, for example, features creations like key lime, coconut cream pie, cherry limeade (topped with a straw), lemon icebox, and orange dreamsicle. If you're craving something a little more, er, spiked, there are also the champagne, margarita and Kentucky bourbon pie cupcakes. And for the chocolate addicts, there are plenty of options: think chocolate cream pie, chocolate salted caramel, chocolate malt, Texas milk chocolate... need we go on? Probably not, because you're probably already eyeing the case right next to us. Just remember: "sugar coma" is not an option. Or maybe it's just a challenge.
