When lightly battered and dunked into the fryer, a deliciously creamy avocado gets just the right amount of crunch... and when done up the Square Pub way, topped with pico de gallo and lime crema, it's packed with flavor.

Let's just go ahead and get this one out of the way: in case you're wondering, it tastes like fried butter. Okay, maybe not quite so rich, but this creation is seriously decadent. And... healthy, right? (The, er, good kind of fat.) Square Pub, the three-story pub on — you guessed it — the Decatur Square, is clearly not your average burgers-and-wings sort of pub... but the fried avocado probably gave that away. Decaturites love 'em for the Southwestern fare served up in a quintessential neighborhood pub environment, and this here appetizer is near the top of many a regular's must-order list.

Some things are meant to be fried. Some things... aren't. (Twinkie) But a soft, buttery avocado is right up there with French fries and doughnuts in terms of fry-ability. When lightly battered and dunked into the fryer, a deliciously creamy avocado (rich enough to get Paula Dean eating her greens) gets just the right amount of crunch... and when done up the Square Pub way, topped with pico de gallo and lime crema, it's packed with flavor. Of course, flavor isn't exactly a rare find in this Decatur pub... after all, these are the guys who make annual pilgrimages out to Hatch, New Mexico to bring back thousands of pounds of the infamous Hatch green chile (ahem, the big roast this year is on September 15, if you're wondering). So I wasn't surprised when I bit into the creamy-crispy avocado on my plate and found that Square Pub had, again, exceeded my expectations of how such a simple idea (remember the tots?) could be given so much moxie. It's hip delicious to be Square.
