Scout Notes: Other than a winning lottery ticket, is there any better surprise than discovering an awesome hidden gem of a restaurant? Sushi lovers rejoice: nestled inside a strip mall in Lawrenceville is sushi so fresh and delicious you won’t mind schlepping yourself there to get it.

Aha Sushi is a cozy, traditional spot with only a few booths and a couple of tables. The best seats, of course, are at the bar itself. From there you can watch Chef David masterfully assemble sushi so gorgeous you’re almost hesitant to eat it--almost. One bite of anything on the menu here--especially the sushi--and you’ll get an appreciation for the restaurant’s name. It will elicit a eureka-like reaction, because sushi simply doesn’t get more fresh or delicious than this. Even though Chef David has only been at Aha Sushi for 3 months, he’s been making sushi for the past 15 years, first in China and then in Fort Lauderdale. Practice makes perfect, and it’s apparent he’s mastered this culinary art form. He wields knives, rice, and fish with lightning- quick dexterity, all while affably engaging customers. My hunger grew with each page I turned of the novella-length menu: sashimi, nigiri, maki, oh my! I finally settled on the popular agadashi tofu appetizer, tempura cheesecake, and the exquisitely unique salmon oshi pressed sushi roll, whose preparation required a small box mold and a blowtorch. After gleefully stuffing my maw and lamenting my lack of multiple stomachs, I remain staunchly unconvinced this food wasn’t the inspiration behind Belinda Carlisle’s “Heaven on Earth,” because it all tastes like divinity to me.
