It's a place where one can kick back, hobnob with a couple friends, perhaps sip a Syrah and nibble on a small plate, all in a relaxed setting that feels more like a living room than a "wine bar."Most self-described wine rooms can strike fear in the hearts of anyone whose vino education hasn't surpassed the Two Buck Chuck level. (Guilty as charged.) A novella of a wine list seems daunting, and the raised eyebrow you might get from a stiff-shirted waiter even more so. True connoisseurs, on the other hand, might have a tough time sniffing out a fine wine (at least not without breaking the bank). In the cozy environs of Purple Corkscrew, however, both types of imbibers are welcome, thanks to both a beginner-friendly atmosphere and a wine selection that aficionados will appreciate. Who would've thought wine snobs and neophytes could co-exist in harmony?
Co-owner Steffini, who started the restaurant and wine room with her sister Kellie, likens it to "a Starbucks with wine" — a place where one can comfortably kick back, hobnob with a couple friends or woo a potential suitor, perhaps sip a Syrah and nibble on a small plate, all in a relaxed setting that feels more like a living room than a "wine bar." Of course, one shan't ever imbibe a fine wine without an equally fine snack upon which to nibble, and the aforementioned small plates are ideal for this kind of laid-back hangout. An assortment of crepes both sweet and savory, from Nutella (oh yes) to wild mushroom, pair surprisingly perfectly with that glass, and of course, an ever-changing cheese board is a fixture on the menu. Coupled with the intimate dining room and a back lounge area with really comfortable couches, and you'll see why we like this hidden little joint so much. It's as simple as the sisters' goal for the place: for people to hang out and drink good wine. Which, in my opinion, is far superior to plain old Starbucks.
