For some, it's a second home. For others, it's a way to slip out of Atlanta momentarily into a NYC-style jazz club, sipping cocktails (named after jazz legends, naturally) in the company of fellow Dizzy Gillespie connoisseurs. It's a cozy little joint underneath a Piedmont Avenue storefront, where the lights are low, the cocktails flow and a soul or funk band is likely already warming up by the time you walk in. Kat's tucked-away jazz club is not exactly a "hidden gem" (it has its fair share of regulars and devotees from all walks of life), but it's certainly flown under our radar for a while. With live music nearly every night, walls adorned in local art, poetry nights and comedy acts throughout the week, as well as a tangible love for the arts throughout the place, Kat's is much more than a live music venue. For some, it's a second home. For others, it's a way to slip out of Atlanta momentarily into a NYC-style jazz club, sipping cocktails (named after jazz legends, naturally) in the company of fellow Dizzy Gillespie connoisseurs. We've never quite seen anything like Kat's here in Atlanta, but we sure are glad we found it.
As a music lover and musician herself, Kat's love for the arts was the reason behind coming up with this hip little joint, and it shows. At barely 6 p.m. on a Friday night, when we went to scope things out, Kat's was already buzzing, with the evening's band warming up into its soundcheck. The barstools were already occupied by cocktail-sipping guests, and a small congregation of people were hanging out in the cozy lounge area near the fireplace. The dishes on the tables also caught our eye, with gourmet pizzas and a tasty-sounding Cajun shrimp pasta (hey, if you're going to groove all night, you'll need sustenance). Indeed, Kat's is the kind of funky place we can dig night after night, sipping on a Baby-Maker (the martini list is awesome) and listening to some hot licks. Because this little underground lounge hits all the right notes.
