Having a good time is sort of what High Country is all about. And the store's atmosphere reflects this laid-back philosophy. "We're looking to give people a really comfortable experience," John explains.
High Country Outfitters at the Avenue in East Cobb has us covered—literally, at least when it comes to anything outdoors. It is the original gear shop for Atlanta's adventuresome fellows (and fellas) opened up in 1975, and has been creating enthusiasts of the outdoor variety ever since. Founders Bubba Sloan and Gerald Marshall saw a void that wasn't filled by the big box stores, and now Bubba's son, John, is in on the act. To be truthful, though? An act is precisely what High Country isn't. The employees aren't just shooting for the sale of a fanciful backpack and some comfy boots (though you'll find both quite easily). No, sir. These folks are the real deal; they know everything about anything in the store because, well, they've used it. In fact, both locations (Marietta and Buckhead) close shop for a few days every now and again to allow for a staff outdoors outing. They called it "gear training."

But having a good time is sort of what High Country is all about. And the store's atmosphere reflects this laid-back philosophy. "We're looking to give people a really comfortable experience," John explains. You won't feel embarrassed asking questions, and the staff won't soon tire of answering them. Whether you're hiking through forests or between classes, the East Cobb locale is brimming with all of the snuggly jackets, rugged-chic bags and acorn-deflecting hats your ventures require. But the staff isn't merely well-versed on their products, they will also happily direct you toward the best hikin' grounds (or rock-climbing, if that's your thing) to fit your experience levels. This might sound corny, but High Country is a rarity. The staff is so genuinely friendly and helpful, you can't help but be excited to get trekkin'.
