Big Apple Inn

100% Off One Tamale at Big Apple Inn
It all started in the 1930s, when April Patton's great-grandfather first moved to Mississippi from Mexico and began selling tamales out of a tin bucket in Jackson. That tin bucket begat the family business. And 75 years later, they're still here.
This little eatery between Cascade Heights and the West End might still be just less than a year old, but make no mistake: this family has been doing their thing long, long before Atlanta got a slice of the action. It all started in the 1930s, when April Patton's great-grandfather first moved to Mississippi from Mexico and began selling tamales out of a tin bucket in Jackson. That tin bucket begat the family business, graced with a name that references her grandfather's favorite swing dance (no one in the family really knows about the "inn" part, though).

Now, 75 years later, the family is still carrying the torch in Jackson and, as of this past summer, in Atlanta's own Westview neighborhood, serving up smoked sausage, pig ears and those beloved little stuffed corn husks, all cooked by April herself. After years spent as an educator, April had a hankering to do something a little different. When she floated the idea of another Big Apple Inn to her mother, she was warned that if she was going to bring the family business to Atlanta, she better do right by the family legacy. Well, after spending a little time watching this one-woman kitchen staff greet regulars and neighbors by name from behind the griddle, we're certain she's doing right by great grandpa. After a taste of those fat little tamales stuffed with masa and meat or veggies, we know she's doing right by us.
