These are some of the finest grilled sandwiches around: fresh bread, whole ingredients and housemade sauces. Oh, and none of that merely-heated-bun nonsense. These folks grill the whole sub, bun and all.We like to think we're not a picky people, by nature. But when we have a grilled sub, we expect—nay, demand—that the entire sub be grilled; not just the bread. Yes, friends, we demand the sub of all subs! Which, luckily, we can find at the appropriately named Sub of Subs. At this unassuming sandwich joint, the sandwich makers shrink away in disgust at the idea of a merely toasted or heated bun. When we sat down with a hot-off-the-grill Torpex Sub, it was clear that this was different from other sub joints around town. And that, in a nutshell (or a piping hot roll), was owner Josh's goal—to pile high on freshly baked bread: steaming chicken, grilled onions and melted provolone cheese, all smothered over with signature SOS hot sauce.
The space is comfortable, too, with booths and small tables designed for catching up, or taking the family out for dinner. The sandwich experts behind the counter make an effort to be friendly to each customer that pops in, many of whom they know from previous visits. (Like us.) And it's not at all uncommon for these visitors to rub their hands in anticipation as they wait for their fresh sub, crafted using only whole ingredients, homemade sauces and, of course, love. Except by "love," we mean hand-sliced deli meats. Naturally.
