The only thing fresher than Bernhard's breads, pastries and deli sandwiches, is his brand-spankin' new organic certification. Organic European breads, baked on the daily? Yes, please.Baking was always Bernhard's hobby, but it wasn't until he made the move to Atlanta from Luneburg, Germany, that it became his career. And in 2007 he made another move—from his old location in Duluth to Marietta. But after sampling this European bakery's goods, we're not entirely convinced that his location matters. Count us in as one of Bernhard's customers who would drive almost any distance to get those loaves of certified organic bread, fresh sandwiches and authentic German comfort food that he's been slinging since 2000. Heck, he could probably move back to Germany, and we'd make a pilgrimage. That bread, you guys...
Yessir, each and every loaf, from the Spelt Whole Grain to the Harvest Festival is organic, making Bernhard's the only such bakery in metro Atlanta to boast the certification, which he earned in July. But Bernhard didn't change his tune when organic food became trendy; no, he's been using organic flour since the beginning. And we can't think of a better complement for said organic breads than a high pile of meats, cheeses and veggies. Luckily, Bernhard is happy to oblige with a whole slew of deli sandwiches flying out of the kitchen. These spoils are, of course, best enjoyed in the small seating area to the side of the bakery, but they're available to go, too. Just grab an Esterhazy (hazelnut meringue layers, filled with rum-flavored buttercreme and topped with a rich chocolate ganache) on the way out. Yes, we'll be back. And often.
