Stuffed with ingredients like ham and creamy melted cheese or ground beef and an olive, each pastry is deep-fried to a golden-brown crisp. It's the perfect warm-up for the meat-mountain that awaits. This unassuming Argentina-via-Buford Highway spot first captured our imagination (and our appetite) with tales of Meat Mountain. But, though the majestic Parrillada del Plata towers on the horizon, it turns out Sabores del Plata is just as much a bakery as it is a steakhouse, churning out a slew of delicious baked goods, sweets and pastries. The best of which, of course, contain — you guessed it — more meat.
For it is the crispy, flaky, golden little empanada that, to us, is the tiny crown jewel of Sabores del Plata's meaty bill of fare. Stuffed with ingredients like ham and creamy melted cheese or ground beef and an olive, each is deep-fried to a golden-brown crisp and served with a cup of fresh chimichurri. And they make the perfect primer to the rest of Sabores del Plata's offerings; think of it like a warm-up before conquering the flank steak, surmounting the short rib, besting the blood sausage and, of course, scaling the great Meat Mountain. Just be sure to keep your eye on the sweet, rich Uruguayan and Argentine desserts awaiting you at the summit. To the victor go the spoils.
