Duluth Rexall Grill feels like it's fresh out of Mayberry, and the food is straight-up down-home cookin'. Regulars (and sometimes especially lucky newcomers) get hugs. And, oh, by the way, it's connected to a drug store, like it has been for 40-odd years. Lynda, both the pharmacist and the restauranteur behind the operation, took over in 1998, and has tried her darndest to make sure things don't change. Because this is a place steeped with memories (served best alongside some lightly fried okra, if you please), it's a time capsule—an unaltered place for people to return over and over with coworkers, family and friends. Seniors, both of the high school and the more elderly variety, make Duluth Rexall Grill their hangout of choice. "But," Lynda reassured us, "you're more than welcome to come by yourself. Just sit next to someone. If you don't know 'em now, you will when you leave."

But even though there's a certain respect for the past here, that doesn't mean they're above all change. In fact, Lynda just added a new feature: Friday night dinners, including an all-you-can-eat option (a choice of fried catfish or chicken, cole slaw, beans and bread—hush puppies count as bread). Additionally, these kind folks are now making breakfast available all day on Saturday and Sunday, so if rolling out of bed around noon is your thing (no judgin'), you can still get some homemade pancakes. No matter the day, as soon as we settled into our retro barstool, cozied up against the vintage Coca-Cola wallpaper and glanced over the menu, we realized we had to give our stomachs a pep talk of sorts. Because downing any number of lunch options, including a slab of moist meatloaf drizzled over with a secret blend of 'cue sauce, ketchup and brown sugar in one sitting? It ain't for the faint of heart, we can tell you that much. Now, pass us some of that cake.
