"Our menu is more contemporary," owner Gloria explained, adding that over the last year, she's added a few Southern influences here and there. Read: tempura cheesecake.
We've long extolled the virtues of this little gem of a sushi and hibachi eatery. We've praised their quick, casual, grab 'n go lunch options, their gimmick-free hibachi skills, and most of all, their sushi, made to order and crafted to perfection by a sushi chef who wields his Santoku blade with an unrivaled quickness. Kochi has, without a doubt, perfected their specialty rolls—but the sushi chef is always happy to hook you up with a little creation you think you might like. (Though we recommend just rolling the dice and letting him choose a plate of sashimi, nigiri, and rice rolls based on what's fresh—just say the not-so-secret code word, umikaze.)

But Kochi is not, as owner Gloria recently reminded us, merely a run-of-the-mill, traditional Japanese joint. "Our menu is more contemporary," she explained, adding that over the last year, she's added a few Southern influences here and there. How, you might ask, could the cuisines of Japan and the Deep South coexist in harmony? Well, for starters, there's bacon in the fried rice. Oh, and a sushi roll stuffed with tempura fried chicken. The crown jewel of this Japanese-via-Georgia menu, though? The insanely rich, completely over-the-top, and award-winning dessert (are you ready for this? We don't think you're ready for this): Deep. Fried. Cheesecake. Your move, Paula Deen.
