We're suckers for its cozy, intimate atmosphere, round booths and simple decor. And now that they've doubled their dining area to include one of the largest Indian buffets in the ATL? Well, don't mind us as we indulge in bottomless portions of their chicken tikka masala, lamb biryani, spicy beef vindaloo and saag paneer (for the veggisaurs). Finally, no more need to fret over deciding between their savory Lamb Biriyani or the freshly made Vegetable Kurma. We can have our Masala and our Tandoori, and eat them too (and some rice pudding, if we can practice enough self control to save some room).
Thirty years ago, when Himalayas first opened its doors, the owners had their eyes to the skies. With the ambition to distinguish themselves (to stand tall compared to the rest) and they certainly haven't shied away from their ambitions. Over the course of their three decades not only have they doubled their seating area, they've also become their own supplier of veggies and meats, a feat few other restaurants can claim (much like climbing their namesake mountain). And their tandoor – an open-topped, charcoal-fired oven with a clay wall where they cook the meats – is a real thing of magic. It's here that our meat of choice (chicken, lamb or beef) is fired to perfection, sautéed in masala gravy, paired with fresh tomatoes and served up as tikka masala. Paired with vegetable biryani rice and we're dancing Bollywood-style with blatant disregard to our fellow patrons. Trust us, it's just that good.
