Zocalo has been a go-to spot for authentic Mexican eats since opening up in Midtown over eighteen years ago. Back in the day, the scene was more of a taco stand slash salsa bar than the current full-service restaurant we’ve grown accustomed to fueling up at before a long night of dedicated dancing just down the street. It has undergone a number of other changes over the past few months alone, the latest of which includes new ownership (by Chef Richard Sandoval of Top Chef Masters fame), a sleek renovated interior and plans for an outdoor bar to compliment the prime people watching patio already in place.

For old fans of their fresh ingredient fare and mad-strong margaritas: no worries. Zocalo’s updated menu is still rocking both, but with a more affordable price tag so that you can get your munch on without fear. Expect traditional Mexican dishes with a dash of daring flavor, such as the habanero-infused Ceviche de Camaron or the Huarache Flatbreads with goat cheese and truffle oil. The preparation of these spicy delights is overseen by Executive Chef Lucero Martinez-Obregon, who has been sharing her family recipes here since the very beginning. Presentation alone is worth a visit; plates are divided into colorful sections rather than thrown together willy-nilly (we’re looking at you, Tex-Mex restaurants). File away the fajitas for your next visit, and you’ll see exactly what we mean. Agave lovers will appreciate the 60 tequilas and mezcales available for curbing the burn post-bite.
