Little did we know, tucked away at the edge of a shopping center in Johns Creek, hides a world-class sushi chef who can whip up truffle-laced sashimi at the drop of a hat.
If there's one thing we've learned from our roving culinary adventures throughout this city, it's that often, the biggest surprises are hidden in the most unexpected of places. (We like to informally refer to this phenomenon as "the Strip Mall Law.") And Sushi Sumo is proof positive of our hypothesis. Little did we know, tucked away at the edge of a shopping center in Johns Creek, hides a world-class sushi chef who can whip up truffle-laced sashimi at the drop of a hat.

At first glance, this unassuming suburban sushi restaurant may look like a solid pan-Asian place where one's cravings for curry, sesame chicken and Rainbow Rolls can be slaked in one fell swoop. Look closer, though, and you'll notice a few things that seem different from your average neighborhood sushi joint. Ingredients like yuzu juice and truffle oil. Rolls delicately formed into perfect heart shapes and topped with a creamy mango puree. And a chef who earned his sushi-making chops at one of the world's most recognized sushi restaurants. Nope, Sushi Sumo definitely isn't just another Chinese/Japanese/Thai catch-all (though they do happen to whip up a mighty tasty curry, we might add). With a chef who came from New York's Nobu earlier this year to freshen the place up in its 15th year of business, Sumo is a real-deal diamond in the rough, and one that's full of surprises. (And by "surprises," we mean dishes like yellowtail sashimi in jalapeƱo-yuzu sauce, topped with truffle oil. Bet you weren't expecting that kind of revelation when you pulled into their parking lot.)
