I couldn't help but feel like I actually was around a bunch of folks I knew, all of us popping in for a taste of the deli's beloved reuben or famous roast beef."Eating among friends" — in the words of the owner, that's what this little deli is all about. And while I didn't know a soul who walked in the door at Capozzi's while I was there, I couldn't help but feel like I actually was around a bunch of folks I knew, all of us popping in for a taste of the deli's beloved reuben or famous roast beef (appointed by the president of Boar's Head as the very best he'd had). It's everything I imagined a classic New York deli not to be: friendly, for one, with truly awesome service and a menu of sandwiches named after regulars. That's why owner Matt says it's "like a New York deli, minus the attitude" (and whatever you do, don't call it a sandwich shop—this place is a real-deal classic delicatessen).
Some love Capozzi's for their chicken salad, others come in droves for a sirloin Philly, but everyone comes for the true-blue deli fare, prepped to perfection thanks to Matt, who spent years working as a chef in German and Italian delis in New York. And we're sure glad he brought that genuine deli food down here to ol' Mayretta and gave it a little dose of Southern hospitality. Because we're always looking for new friends. (And hey, if you keep coming back, you might just get a sandwich named after you.)
