Stand aside pizza and burritos – there's a new sheriff in town: double crust savory pies. Ever since Panbury's opened up shop in the Sweet Auburn Market, they're pretty much all we can think of.Pizza, burritos – you've got some fierce competition. Ever since Panbury's opened up in our beloved Sweet Auburn Market, we've only had one thing on our mind: double crust pies. These savory hand-held treats are perfect for just about any time of day: breakfast? Sure! Lunch? You betcha. Midnight snack? Yuppity yup, just reheat it in your toaster oven. And though their golden, crispy crusts may look cutlery-worthy, there's no need – Panbury's owner, Lauren, assures us: it's totally fine to be hands-on whilst chowing down. (That's how it's done in her home country of South Africa, after all.)
These may be new on our radar, but double crust pies are something the folks behind Panbury's have grown up lovin'. Lauren, Panbury's owner, came to America back in 2009 and immediately began dreaming of opening up a savory pie place of her own. She missed their golden, flaky crusts and spicy, piquant innards. Once she met Adam, an aficionado chef of all pies meat-filled, she knew her dreams would come true. It was only a matter of time before she, her family and Adam were serving up their own innovative takes on the South African classics. Of course, they serve up the standbys like their cracked-pepper steak, which is filled with a juicy combination of beef, onions and freshly cracked black pepper (coupled with some of her rustic-style mash and gravy, this is a meal that can't be beat). But then there are more innovative pies too, like their cajun chicken gumbo pie (which is just as majestic as it sounds) or their green thai chicken curry pie, whose shiitake mushrooms and green onions teamed with sweet coconut cream, spicy thai chilies and tangy lime is a grand fusion of flavor, indeed. Having trouble deciding which pie to start with? Not to worry, these beauties heat up wonderfully. (Told ya they're perfect for a midnight snack.)
