Kids' parties have really come a long way from ice cream cake and Dad dressing up like a clown. When we heard about Posh Tot Events and its hostess with the mostest Jennifer, our childhood memories of Chuck E. Cheese (Showbiz Pizza, anyone?) were put to shame. We had Jennifer pencil our Q&A session into her busy schedule of privileged princesses, cowboys and indians. This one's for all the moms with lucky little ones out there:
SCOUT: How might people know you?
Jennifer: Party planning guru, control freak, busy mom and social media junkie.
SCOUT: And what’s your background? Or how’d you get into event planning for kids?
Jennifer: I spent 15 years in corporate America doing various marketing roles in start-ups and Fortune 500 companies. I’ve always loved to plan parties and have been obsessed with entertaining for as long as I can remember. When my son turned one, I threw an over-the-top baseball-themed party that gave me the idea for Posh Tot Events.
SCOUT: Sounds like a lucky little guy. Now that you're a pro, tell us the best event you've pulled off?
Jennifer: I think my favorite kid party was an “Under the Sea” theme I did for little girl’s 5th birthday. In addition to all the usual details, the mom and I conspired to surprise the moms with chair massages and a gourmet coffee bar. Parents attending kid’s parties are lucky to get a bottle of water, so these moms were thrilled!
SCOUT: Wow, that seems like a party worth crashing. Tell us the craziest part of planning events for kids?
Jennifer: The one thing I always tell my staff is that “something is always going to go wrong." You have to be resourceful and able to think on your feet in this business – especially when you are dealing with little kids. I think the craziest thing that ever happened was when I was setting up a princess party and accidentally cracked my head on the low- hanging chandelier in my client’s dining room. The party was about to start and I had blood gushing down my forehead!. A little ice and a princess band-aid and the show went on. But it was touch and go for a few minutes there!
SCOUT: Who knew event planning for kids could be such a dangerous job? So where do you go to safely escape the role of “busy mom/event guru”?
Jennifer: Atlanta is full of great places to listen to music but there is this great little dive in Marietta called Darwin's that has the best Blues around. If you can stand the smoke, it’s definitely worth it!
SCOUT: Favorite part of living in ATL?
Jennifer: What’s not to love? It’s central to everything, we have great restaurants, great people and great weather. I love that I am always meeting new people and everyone has a story.
SCOUT: Agreed. And your least favorite part?
Jennifer: My only complaint is being land locked. I grew up in the Massachusetts near the beach and lived in San Francisco for several years. I miss being able to see the ocean.
SCOUT: You have friends from out of town visiting you who’ve never seen the city and you want to plan something while the kids have a babysitter. Where are you taking them on “Jennifer’s Tour de ATL?”
Jennifer: The Atlanta Botanical Gardens for sightseeing, Park Tavern for people watching, Eclipse di Luna for Tapas and music, Whiskey Blue for cocktails.
SCOUT: And your favorite venue to host a party (for kids and adults) in ATL?
Jennifer: There are so many great venues in Atlanta to host parties. We have done some great kid parties at Chocolate Pink in Midtown and I love taking advantage of the great parks in the city. For my own parties, I usually opt to entertain at home because it gives me free reign to go crazy with the décor and the details and start setting up days in advance!
SCOUT: So what’s next for Posh Tot Events?
Jennifer: We are growing FAST! We have added several party hostesses this spring and I am looking to start selling franchises by the end of this year. On my business “Bucket List” I have a children’s party book, a line of fun kid party supplies and a Party-in-a-Box package that I can sell nationally.
