Rummaging Through Historic 'Crap' at City Hall East

Talk about one hot mess.

Scheduled to run through Saturday, shoppers of the Great City Hall East Rummage Sale are roaming the abandoned warehouse building, claiming the best of what's left in office chairs, Olympic lemonade stands, used file cabinets, helmets, and plenty of other "assorted crap" that's up for sale. All the oddities are available for purchase between the hours of 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., though much of the good stuff was swooped up in the first open hours on Monday. Lines were long. The crowds were thick. It was very, very hot up in there. And before we could find that swivel chair we've been dying to own, we gave up due to overactive sweat glands and the cluster#%$& that was the check-out line.

So why the major liquidation of the space now? Private developers are in talks to purchase the former Sears distribution warehouse, and the city was charged with the task of cleaning it up. And while there were some success stories, our experience was more in line with the folks over at Creative Loafing who just unearthed some entertainment at best.
