In the Great Sandwich Showdown-Throwdown of North Highland (that's Super Pan vs. the Blimpie inside Buddy’s), competition is pretty stacked. But it won't take a panel of Top Chef judges to hand Hector Santiago’s new Latin sandwich shop, SUPER PAN, the grand prize. Just under Pura Vida, the lunchtime sister shop brings the creative flavors and locally-sourced ingredients we've come to expect from Santiago. And all the buzz intrigued our Scoutmob team to make a Friday afternoon pit stop for a few of Santiago's sandwiches. Or should we call them "Super-wiches". (No? Okay... fine then.)
BEHOLD, SUPER PAN! Which, from the looks of the logo, seems to be the Superman to Santiago's Clark Kent. That is, if Clark Kent were a Latin chef by day. If so, we're happy to have our taste buds saved by his culinary powers on a regular, daytime basis. Super Pan's menu is simple, with a list of seven gourmet sandwiches, each with its own Santiago-style twist of ingredients. The Shrimp Coctel Bolillo ($9) came with an unexpected (but yummy-to-the-tummy) twist of pickled garlic and ginger. And those Pork Belly Buns ($10) were oh-so-easy to devour, succulent and savory, as expected. We ran into some fellow Atlanta foodies who recommended the traditional Medio Dia ($11) of crispy skin Adobo roasted Berkshire pork and the fixins of pickles, swiss and habanero mustard.
With our superhero sammies, we also sampled a seasonal Beet Ceviche salad and a - wait for it - Beet and Raspberry Lemonade, which was equal perfect proportions of Beet, Raspberry, and, yep, you guessed it... lemonade.
Thanks Super Pan, whoever you are, for saving our lunchtime lives from the average submarine sandwich with paper-shredded lettuce.
