They'll lay down six different kinds of hurt on your tail—and they'll do it while skating backwards. The Atlanta Rollergirls have been a force of nature in the Dirty South since 2004, and if you haven't yet seen these powerful women in action, you haven't yet become a true Atlantan. Yeah, we said it. Aggressive, fast-paced, and a little bit brutal, roller derby is a sport on par with the likes of pro-wrestling... but on skates.

Of course, we love 'em for their names ('sup, Queen Loseyateefa!), but we also love 'em because these ladies are in it for the camaraderie, athleticism and adrenaline, too. So, who are they? Meet the newest additions to your friendly local badasses on wheels, the Atlanta Roller Girl rookies (and be sure to catch them at this Saturday's bouts):

Name: Peewee Slayhouse
Team: Toxic Shocks
Position: Blocker

What made you decide to sign up for derby?

I was overweight and out-of-shape, and started running and weight-lifting to get my body back. I soon found myself with herniated discs in my neck, and [so I] couldn't tolerate running anymore. I took up skating with my oldest son and heard about a roller derby bootcamp. One day, and I was hooked.

Name: Helga G. Pa-SMACK-i
Team: Denim Demons
Position: Blocker

How'd you come up with your derby name?

Helga G. Pataki was a cartoon character on Hey Arnold. She's not afraid to be mean or say and do what she wants. (When I first started derby, I was timid and shy.)

What made you decide to sign up for derby?

When I saw Whip It!, it was love at first sight. As soon as I got out of the theater I was googling "Atlanta Roller Derby." That same weekend, I read the rules and then went to my first open skate since elementary school birthday parties. Before roller derby, I was a total bookworm. My friends and family thought it would be a short-lived phase.

Name: Ida Backoff
Team: Apocalypstix
Position: Blocker

Tell us how you came up with your derby alias.

My name represents two things. First: my grandmother, Ida. She was admitted to nursing home with Alzheimer's when I was given the opportunity to choose my name. Little did I know it would keep her with me every single day. Second: Backoff? Well, that pretty much sums up my personality. I have always been a tough, in-your-face kind of person. Are people afraid of me? Yes. But that was long before derby. My wife has called me a "force of nature" since the day she met me. So Ida Backoff if I was you!

An opportunity to talk some smack: why will you kick ass this season, and why should Atlanta derby fans keep an eye on you/your team?

Um, have you seen my picture? I don't know anyone else in this league who can bench press their captain and deadlift 255 pounds. I may not be the most fancy on my feet but I am one strong woman with a Stix Army by my side!

Name: Lady Skatepants
Team: Denim Demons
Position: Blocker

Are your friends, family and coworkers afraid of you now?

Well, my family is pretty athletic. They're only intimidated if I challenge them on their bicycles. My coworkers have questioned and joked around about derby. However, they know not to mess with me when I show up to work with fresh scrimmage bruises.

The Demons are learning fast, skating hard, and getting stronger...all while maintaining levelheaded team spirit. Everyone gets jitters on bout day, and for good reason—there is intense competition to be had! We'll be bringing it.

Name: Fullatrix Lestrange
Team: Sake Tuyas
Position: Jammer

How'd you come up with your derby name?

My skate name is Fullatrix Lestrange, and it seems only hardcore Harry Potter fans catch on to it. The character Bellatrix Lestrange was so wickedly awesome. Then, of course, Helena Bonham Carter only made the character more magnificent in the movies.

What made you decide to sign up for derby?

After one night of bootcamp, I was hooked. I hadn't been on roller skates in over 10 years, so that was a huge obstacle to overcome, and then they just kept on throwing new things at me. Derby is constantly evolving and never gets easy; I'll always have some new goal to reach and something to keep pushing myself harder for—it keeps things interesting, and it keeps me in great shape!

Tell us how you came up with your derby alias.

I lived and worked in California for a long time and loved it there. I wanted to come up with a name that incorporated that and was completely opposite from what I did for a living.

I worked so hard to get where I am and play for Atlanta, so now I'm really putting the pedal to the metal to prove myself worthy. The Toxic Shocks surprised everyone when we crushed the Denim Demons in our first bout of this season, so definitely keep your eye on us because this is our year—shock you!
