They'll lay down six different kinds of hurt on your tail—and they'll do it while skating backwards. The Atlanta Rollergirls have been a force of nature in the Dirty South since 2004, and if you haven't yet seen these powerful women in action, you haven't yet become a true Atlantan. Yeah, we said it. Aggressive, fast-paced, and a little bit brutal, roller derby is a sport on par with the likes of pro-wrestling... but on skates.

Just in time for this weekend's bouts, we caught up with ten rookies and transfer players who are in their first year of tearing it up on Atlanta's track. What we learned? We're in for one heck of a season, Atlanta. (Oh, and don't get too salty with Jumbo Shrimp unless you want to get hip-checked.)

Name: Brick
Team: Toxic Shocks & Jukes of Hazzard

What made you decide to sign up for derby?
I was playing kickball with a local kickball team when Bebo the coach with Muscogee Roller Girls ask me to check out Roller Derby. I fell in love!

Opportunity for smack-talking: why should ATL keep an eye on your team?
The Toxic Shocks are pushing my limits. I am becoming a stronger and more confident player, so Demons, Stix, Sakes: watch out! Shock you!

Got a signature move?
I don’t know if I have a signature move, but I sure do love to counter-block!

Name:Violent Beauregarde
Team: Toxic Shocks

How'd you come up with your derby name?
It’s a play on Violet Beauregarde (gum) from "Charlie & the Chocolate Factory." Her personality was hilarious to me, so assertive and aggressive, especially compared to my laid back personality.

Are your friends/family members/coworkers a little afraid of you now?
Probably not, but I do find myself bumping random things out of my way with my hips all the time now.

Got a signature move?
I love flipping around to front point than I can see what's going on behind me better. Probably because I'm just really nosy.

Name: Jumbo Shrimp
Team: Denim Demons

How'd you come up with your derby name?
I am only 4'11", and I like a good oxymoron.

Opportunity for smack-talking: how do you plan to kick ass this season, & why should ATL keep an eye on your team?
I am working hard to become as amazing as my teammates, with their immovable walls and jammer-encircling defense. ATL should keep an eye on my team because we are dedicated to awesome.

Are your friends/family members/coworkers a little afraid of you now?
A little. I hip-check my husband if he's being salty.

Name: Whoa Nellie
Team: Sake Tuyas

What made you decide to sign up for derby?
I came to see my college teammate (Jammunition) in a bout two years ago and I was amazed. It was like basketball on skates, except there was no ball, and no one got ejected when they hit the crap out of each other. So I bought some hand-me-down plastic Wal-Mart skates and signed up for Rec League immediately. I didn't know how to skate. Or stop. I proceeded to fall on my butt repeatedly. It was great.

Oh yeah: the Sakes are coming for ya. Be afraid.

Got a signature move?
I really like to hit people. Is that bad?

Name: N.M.E.
Team: Toxic Shocks

What made you decide to sign up for derby?
I saw the Atlanta Rollergirls skate in KISS makeup in 2009.  It was the most exciting sport I had ever seen. I was so fired up!  After the bout was over, I turned to the group that was with me and said: “I’M GOING TO DO THIS!”

Opportunity for smack-talking: how do you plan to kick ass this season, & why should ATL keep an eye on your team?
My goal for this season is be a sponge: absorb all the information and sneak in, in stealth mode. The Shocks are a strong group of roller girls. I have all the confidence in my teammates to make all the holes for our jammers and knock down others with one-hit wonders.

Got a signature move?
I can pivot around you and most blockers really hate it.

Name: The Antagonist
Team: Sake Tuyas

What made you decide to sign up for derby?
I needed an outlet, preferably one that involved hitting things.

How'd you come up with your derby name?
It’s not just a name. It’s who I am.

Are your friends/family members/coworkers a little afraid of you now?
They’d better be.

Name: Luna Critz
Team: Apocalypstix

What made you decide to sign up for derby?
I've been involved with the Atlanta Rollergirls since 2012, when I joined rec league. I learned a lot of my derby skills there!

Opportunity for smack-talking: how do you plan to kick ass this season, & why should ATL keep an eye on your team?
The Apocalypstix are ready for an exciting season! On bout day, we wear pink! STIX LIFE!

Transfer Players:

Name: Madditude Adjustment
Team: Apocalypstix & Rumble B's

What made you decide to sign up for derby?
I was an athlete growing up. When I moved for the third time in less than three years I needed a way to meet people and wanted to incorporate some sports/physical activity back in to my life, and I found roller derby!

Opportunity for smack-talking: how do you plan to kick ass this season, & why should ATL keep an eye on your team?
The Stix have great coaches and leadership to take us through the season.  We have a lot of new skaters (including myself) this year and are really meshing well together. I'm looking forward to our next game!

Are your friends/family members/coworkers a little afraid of you now?
My family has been super supportive of me playing derby!  And my coworkers come to watch our games, but I think they are a little terrified of me.

Name: Rosie Derivator
Team: Denim Demons & Rumble B's

What made you decide to sign up for derby?
I like to say that finding derby was fate.  I have had problems with stress and anxiety, and they were at a particular high in my life. I was advised to find a hobby that was for me and only me. The next day, I got a message from the Dominion Derby Girls. My first time seeing the ferocity and athleticism of derby practice was enough for me to know I'd found what I needed.

How'd you come up with your derby name?
This name has been quite a few years in the making. I've played around with a few names that were fun and fitting at the time, but I really wanted something that was tough, feminine, and nerdy. I'm a big fan of pinup culture and an engineer by trade, so Rosie the Riveter has always been a big icon in my life. My love for calculus made Rosie Derivator the perfect combination of everything I am and want to be.

As a member of the B's and Demons, I'm on skates 4-5 days a week, play against Atlanta's men's league every weekend and cross train/do off-skates training at least twice a week (body weight training, cross fit,  and rock climbing).  In a league that boasts one of top 10 WFTDA teams in the world (the Atlanta Rollergirls All-star team, aka the Dirty South Derby Girls), the competition is fierce just playing against teammates, so it's even more so against opponents.

Name: The Boss
Team: Apocalypstix & Rumble B's

What made you decide to sign up for derby?
I saw a few bouts around Athens, where I was living, and I have always played sports my whole life. Watching derby made me miss being competitive within a team sports setting. So I started going to the skating rink several times a week to remind myself how to skate again and then I went to tryouts.

Are your friends/family members/coworkers a little afraid of you now?
Haha, I don't think so. Most of my friends play roller derby and my family is more supportive than afraid of me. My mom likes to give me tips. For example, after one game she said, "those girls you played against are bigger than you, try to push them harder to get through the pack faster." I just smiled and said, " Thanks, Mom." She can’t help herself, she still thinks she's watching me play grade-school soccer. She's the best.

Opportunity for smack-talking: how do you plan to kick ass this season, & why should ATL keep an eye on your team?
Oh, I know when to keep my mouth shut….haha! I plan on kicking ass this season by trying my hardest to make my new teammates proud and make sure that they don’t regret drafting me. Atlanta should watch out for the Stix in 2014 because we have some really great chemistry this season, and I know we are going to put on some really intense bouts!
