Where in Austin can you eat scrumdiddlyumptious food, drink tasty cocktails, compete in trivia night, check out live music and kick it with the ghost of a 150 year-old preacher? If you guessed Opal Divine’s Freehouse on 6th street, then you guessed the right place! A 6th Street favorite for years, The Freehouse is the place to go if you want to sit back and enjoy an evening of feasting and libations with friends. Oh, and don’t be afraid to bring your pooch. Doggies are welcomed on the patio too! But I doubt you'll be wanting to share that burger with Fido.

If dining at Opal Divine’s feels like hanging out at home, there is a reason for that. The 19th century building was the former house of Austinite B.J. Smith—minister, college president, proprietor of 6th Street and one resourceful dude. His house was made from bits he carried away from the nearby quarry. He obviously knew what he was doing because the house stands as strong and tall as ever—18 inch walls and all. What makes the restaurant even cozier is their all-American and comfort fair with a healthy twist. A standout on the menu is Susan’s Salad—romaine lettuce, spring mix, loaded with veggies and fruit, topped with toasted walnuts and gorgonzola cheese, and served with a side of Opal’s yummy homemade prickly pear vinaigrette. If you’re looking for something a little more robust, try Opal’s sizzling fajitas made with all natural black angus beef, natural chicken, or veggies. Now for those of you who really want to spice up your day, try what former Statesman food critic Mike Sutter calls a “fury of dragon’s breathe and jalapeno smolder.” The Urban Bubba is no light task. Topped with grilled onions, jalapenos, gorgonzola, chipotle mayo and wing sauce on a whole wheat bun, this burger is likely to make your taste buds dance, dance, dance.
