Rare Bird

Leather Worker
Boston, MA

"I go and pour over hides, looking for interesting pieces. I don't necessarily want a perfect piece of leather––it's the spots and scratches that make them unique."

Natalie's family was very DIY-oriented––from masonry and log cabins to well-intentioned, but poorly executed, taxidermy (we didn't ask)––they were always making stuff, and bags seemed like a natural extension. After all, Natalie loves making things that are both beautiful and useful. She had learned to sew from her very fashionable grandmothers, so all she had to do was transform a two-dimensional piece of choice leather into something with shape and body. "It's a bit more like a geometry problem than an art project," she explains. Luckily for us, she knows how to tackle those too.
