Roller derby chic, completely unique.Summer may be halfway over, but there’s still plenty of time to hit one of Chicago’s many beaches, or take that road trip you’ve been dreaming of. And what better statement could you possibly make on the shores of Lake Michigan than an electric green bikini with a rotting-flesh zombie face printed across the front? And for that road trip, well, if you’re going by motorcycle, you’ll be the envy of all the other riders belly-up at the biker bar with a leather seat cover custom-inked by a local Chicago tattoo artist in a manner that would make Sailor Jerry himself proud. Bucktown’s Broken Cherry Boutique can hook you up with these unique, eclectic pieces and many more.
Owner Rémey Rozin got her start as a t-shirt designer, until she got rolling with another passion — roller derby. Rozin began designing and printing the uniforms for the then-fledgling Windy City Rollers derby, eventually joining the league herself and skating under the name her store now bears. Now, Broken Cherry celebrates all aspects of the culture: unique expressions of style, wheels (roller skate and motorcycle) and above all, rock ‘n’ roll. Beauty enthusiasts will be at home among the many jars of pomade and makeup from Medusa’s Makeup, the predecessor of another iconic, now-defunct Chicago punk-rock boutique.
In addition to bold boutique items from designers and local artists, the team at Broken Cherry has stayed true to their custom roots with a variety of make-it-your-way apparel options. Whether you’re looking for screen-printed jerseys for your kickball team, a glittery gag gift for a significant other or getting that old, broken-in pair of jeans patched up, the team at Broken Cherry is happy to offer their services.
