Meet 730 South, a Bonnie Brae neighborhood bar and grill where the menu isn’t a set-in-stone,you-will-eat-what-we-tell-you mandate, but rather a mere suggestion.
Most of us, upon reaching a certain age, have learned the valuable lesson that we can’t always get what we want (note: many reality TV stars are exempt from this wisdom). However, we’ve uncovered a spot that promises you not only what you need, but also that which you crave. Meet 730 South, a Bonnie Brae neighborhood bar and grill where the menu isn’t a set-in-stone, you-will-eat-what-we-tell-you mandate, but rather a mere suggestion. Their culinary recommendations, though tasty, can be manipulated, substituted or just flat our ignored. In the mood for a quesadilla but don’t see it? Ask and you shall receive! Want a steak without the meat? That’s really weird, but they’ll still do it for you. They’re total push-overs.

“You’re either a regular, or you’ve never been here before,” owner Larry Herz tells me. “And you’ve never seen regulars like these.” If repeat business is a testament to a restaurant’s greatness, then 730 South is the Muhammad Ali of eateries. One family, who has a special booth reserved just for them, frequents 45 times a month. Other groups of regulars stop in 4 times a week. Basically, the restaurant has become a kitchen table of sorts for nearby families, singles and movers and shakers. It’s a community within a café. “These regulars make up their own dishes; whatever they’re in the mood for. Our only rule is we don’t say no.”

If it’s your first time in or you’re feeling especially low-maintenance, check out the calamari appetizer, fish tacos or chicken mac and cheese – all menu staples. Or, try one of the six daily specials (examples include beef and cilantro empanadas and yellow curry chicken pot pie), all of which are based on what Larry’s in the mood for that day. Wash it down with a glass – or better yet, a bottle – of wine. With 30 bottles under $30, you can add buzz to your meal without a buzz kill on your wallet. Good, customizable food and cheap booze? Who said you can’t always get what you want?
