It's the only place we know of that serves up 280 different tequilas and mezcals with Mexican zombiewrestler posters on the wall.Mezcal is a great place to begin a night of bad decisions. With its vibrant atmosphere, famous fish tacos and, oh yeah, 280 different bottles of tequila and mezcal, it’s pretty much spring wrapped up and plopped onto a bustling block of Colfax.
For nearly a decade, Mezcal has been serving up made-from-scratch Norteño-style Mexican food and so many different margarita concoctions that it’ll make your head spin (literally). Mezcal has so many different tequilas and mezcals that extra storage is needed —they don’t all fit behind the bar. Talk about hoarding at its finest.
Because the eatery prides itself on being a neighborhood hang-out, there’s always something going on. Like the taco eating contests, which pit competitive eaters and taco-loving rookies against each other for the ultimate prize: pride and more tacos (winners score Mezcal gift certificates). Or Thursday night Mexican barbecues, where vittles like ribs, chorizo and jalapeno mac 'n cheese light up the menu. And because Mezcal cares about your education, they host free tequila tastings so you’ll know your añejos from your reposados and your mezcal from your tequila. (The difference? While both are made from the agave plant, the heart of the agave is smoked to make mezcal and steamed for tequila). The kitchen is open late—every night till 1 a.m.—so stop by any time.
