FAQ

All the questions we thought you might be curious enough to ask:

What in tarnation is Scoutmob and what kind of name is that anyway?
Scoutmob is bringing you access to the local scene with mobile deals on local restaurants, bars, and entertainment. We also include the latest tidbits and curious finds for you to explore whatʼs happening around town. As for the name, we think of ourselves (and our followers) as local scouts. We also happen to be mobile, flashmob-ish, and tied to the mob. Minus that last part.
Y'know what's weird?
Pavlovian conditioning! Next question.

Deals in General

When do the deals start? How soon can I go take advantage of the deal?
As soon as you can! Get down to the restaurant/store as soon as you get a chance and score that deal. BUT! Be sure to check the fine print and hours of availability. We wouldn’t want you to get there and be all disappointed. Disappointing you is, well, something that really disappoints us.
I want to get the deal. But Iʼm scared.
Well, if youʼre worried about being committed to a deal, then chill. Unlike other sites, we donʼt require you to pay upfront for our featured deals. And we promise to never, ever, ever spam you. See? Not so scary.
I’m receiving a daily email from Scoutmob, can I take that to my local business to get the discount?
Not so quickly. Each day’s email highlights a new deal (plus plenty of other non-deal related local goodness) that is automatically loaded to your Scoutmob mobile app. You can access deals there, or if you don’t have the app, you can get our deals by text message or email.
When do deals end?
Deals are available for your use over a period of time, usually three to six months, but sometimes it’s a week and other times longer than that. Always check text message and email fine print for availability and more information. If you have the app, we’ll be sure to let you know when deals are about to end soon or ending that day. Use the “Expiring” filter on the app to sort by deals about to expire in the next two weeks. And also note 100% off deals are usually fleeting, so get them while you can!
Why do you limit the number of deals?
Weʼre all about giving you options to get out and do more, but we also take a certain pride in curating the very best of the city. So we may not have a deal at every place in the local directory, but we promise our list will be up to standards. Maybe you donʼt like the deal today, but we promise to offer plenty of really hard-to-pass up local experiences every day. So stay tuned!
What if I get stung by a jellyfish?
Another good question. You may just have to pee on it. That should take the bite out of the sting, but then again, this means you’ll also be drenched in urine. Next question.
Where do you find these deals?
We work directly with local businesses to bring you exclusive deals only available through Scoutmob. We choose only the most recommended, quality-rated businesses, and we try them out for ourselves before we ever send you scouting that way. Unlike other services, we're not a "coupon aggregator,” these deals are specific to our Scoutmob community.
I saw a sweet deal about a month ago. Can I get in on that?

If you happen to be the owner of a fancy smartphone, then you have access to our free Scoutmob app. Which means you have access to all of the current Scoutmob deals until they expire. The app lets you search for deals by new, expiring or nearby locations.

If you need to claim a deal by text message or email, do it on the day that it's featured. We wish we could go back and give out codes for past deals, but unfortunately the restaurants and stores we do business with wouldn’t like that very much.

Can I combine my Scoutmob deal with other offers or specials?
Not unless we say so. And come on, now. Isn’t that just getting greedy?
I spotted a Scoutmob deal in Foursquare or Foodspotting. What’s the deal?
Go forth and use it! It works just like a Scoutmob deal, only it’s available through one of our super cool mobile partners. But before you start thinking you may only need to check for deals in those partner apps, remember: our exclusive Pop-up deals, Return Perks, content, and other such special sauce will only be reserved on the Scoutmob app.
What if I have a question about today's deal?
We suggest you take any questions you have about a particular deal straight to that business. All contact information along with the general information about the deal is listed in the daily write-up. Beyond that, the business can probably answer your more specific questions. If not, you know you always have us here.
Can I use Scoutmob deals or the Scoutmob app in any city?
Negative, Ghostrider. Scoutmob is only useful to people frequenting the fine businesses of Atlanta, New York City, San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, Los Angeles, Denver, Austin, Dallas, Chicago, Boston, Washington DC, and Nashville for now. Therefore, our app is pretty much like foreign currency in any other city: cool to look at, but otherwise, pretty useless. Though, hey, we like where your head's at.

Deals via Smartphone

I heard I could get all the best of the Scoutmob experience via this free, new-fangled Scoutmob app. So how exactly do I get in on that?
The answer’s quite simple, Scout: you gotta join the mob. No, not that mob. Download the Scoutmob app on your iPhone, Android or Blackberry. Each and every deal, article and event list is automatically loaded straight to your phone. There’s plenty of other goodness to be had on the app, but we’ll get to that in a bit.
Ok, I’ve got the latest intelligent cellular telephone technology. Now what?

Step One: Join the mob. No, not that mob. Download the Scoutmob app on your iPhone, Android or Blackberry, where each and every deal is automatically loaded. If you don’t have a smartphone, look for the "Join the Mob" box on the website, enter your email and you'll be on the list to receive our daily emails which also include local goodness along with your sweet, sweet deals.

Step Two: Pull up your Scoutmob when deciding where to dine, shop or play in your city.

Step Three: You want to use one of those fancy free deals? Just click on the “USE THE DEAL” button and the app will prompt you to make sure you are ACTUALLY ready to use the deal. If you’re sure, and your phone’s GPS can locate you at the featured location, then confirm and BAM! You got yourself a deal. Show the merchant on hand your deal screen, click “I’M DONE”. Easy peasy.

Step Four: Jump up and around! If you were already jumping around, then start walking like an Egyptian. And if you’re already walking like an Egyptian, then... dude, you definitely don’t need any of us telling you what to do.

Step Five: Be sure to check the app each day for new deal goodness and other local nuggets in the form of articles and event happenings. It’s always fresh and updated daily!

Can I use my iPad or iPod Touch for the Scoutmob app?

The best answer is yes AND no!

Yes, you can access the App Store and download the Scoutmob app. You can access all content and read about all of the deals, but you will need Wi-Fi connectivity to actually use any of the deals or filter by nearby deals. We suggest you still text or email your favorite deals to yourself, you know, just in case. We’d hate for you to miss out because of some faulty Wi-Fi connection at the deal location.

Do I need to ‘Use the Deal’ to reserve it for later use?
NO. Do nothing. The app collects all the deals for you, so you never miss a thing. Well, that is, if you remember to check the app. Just click “USE THE DEAL’ when you are at the business and ready to pay. Simple.
I tried to use the deal, but the app said it couldn’t locate me. What gives?

Make sure you’re actually at the business. Kinda like making sure your stove is turned on before you try to heat something, you can’t actually use a deal unless you’re actually at the location and your GPS is able to locate you there.

Sometimes, just trying to click out of the deal and then trying it again works. Phones can be funny like that.

Ensure you have data signal or are connected to WiFi. The Edge network or Jitterbug just doesn’t cut it.

Ensure “location services” are turned on for the Scoutmob app.

Locate yourself on you phone’s map app to make sure it actually knows where you are, then try again.

If all else fails, quit the app and try again.

How do I turn location services on?
iPhone: Settings>Location services (make sure this is on)> Scroll down to Scoutmob (make sure this is on also)
How do I find a particular deal or neighborhood?

We have a fancy SEARCH feature if you’re looking for a particular deal or neighborhood. Just type in the name and see what comes up.

We also have a FILTER feature at the top of the app if you want to sort by neighborhood, favorited deals that you’ve saved, or types of deal or cuisine.

You can also use the map function (see the map icon at the top right of the nav bar) to have it locate all the deals around you.

I swear I saw a deal for a sweet local business, but now it’s disappeared. What gives?
Two things might be to blame here: The deal has expired and therefore is no longer available. (Cue the sad violins.) Or the deal you saw was a POP-UP deal on the app, which means it may be available at certain hours, but is not currently available. You can search for this deal by name and check the availability in the fine print.
How do I turn off notification badges (A.K.A. Those red dots with numbers that show up on my iPhone’s menu)?

Go into your iPhone’s Settings> Go to Notifications > Scroll down to Scoutmob app> look for Badge App icon > Slide this off

Badges be gone!

How do I change my city on the app?

Navigate cities on the iPhone app by heading to the OPTIONS subnav on the bottom right corner and clicking on “SWITCH CITY”. Be sure your chosen city is checked on this list and then hit “Done” in the top right corner.

On Android you will have to find your options/menu button that is on the phone (not in the app). This will bring you the app options.

Other than deals being automatically loaded to my phone, what other goodness comes with having the Scoutmob app?

In a virtual nutshell, we have all kinds of awesomeness loaded into the app. The extra awesomeness includes, but is not limited to:

Pop-up Deals: deals happening only on the phone, at limited times

Return Perks: Extra incentive to return after using your first deal at a location

Articles and Happenings: All of our editorial content and curated event lists are waiting for your perusal on the app. Updated daily!

Mustache Cam: Needs no explanation (iPhone only)

Curiosities: Needs even less explanation (select cities and Android only)

What are these elusive “Pop-Up” deals that I sometimes see on my deal compass... and then sometimes don’t?
Like Bigfoot, these special opportunities will only be showing themselves on occasion. They are rare deal opportunities exclusive to app users, and limited to specific dates and times. When valid, they will appear in the main deal compass. Be sure to check days and hours of availability so you know when you take advantage of these.
What is a 100% off deal?
Free stuff? It’s true. A local business wants to offer you one free item to get your backside in the front door. It’s automatically available on your mobile app, and available for a limited time. So get to it!
I tried to use a coupon, but the cashier wouldn't accept it. What do I do?
We do everything in our power to make sure this never happens. That said, thereʼs always the chance that some wires donʼt connect or an employee can't figure how to handle this new-fangled Scoutmob contraption. If thatʼs the case, we recommend you speak with a manager who is familiar with our program. Or contact us directly and weʼll straighten people out.
No fair! I want some extra app goodness on my Palm/Windows Mobile/Tracphone/Zack Morris phone!

Sorry, Preppy. While those are all fine devices for communication, weʼre taking it one step at a time and focusing on the iPhone, Android, and BlackBerry for now. Once thatʼs all well and good, we might just turn our attention to other platforms.

For now, you can access most deals through our partners’ apps, Foursquare and Foodspotting.

Mobile Phones

Deals via phone? Why phone?
Because these days, like it or not, you're always with it. We figure you might as well have your convenient awesome deals right there in your pocket. And, with the magic of mobile, you donʼt have to wait for a deal via snail mail, carrier pigeon, or even your printer. It's all right there as soon as you decide you want it. So yes, you hippie, weʼre also green!
What if I/ the deal-fairies/ Jimmy Hoffa/ my kids delete my text message deal?

Well first off, that’s improbable; your kids would never do such a thing. But if your text message deal disappears off your phone for whatever reason, there are a few things you can do to retrieve it:

- If you lose the deal on the same day that the deal is featured, you can try to re-send the deal to your phone or try sending it to your email.

- If that's not working or it's been a few days or weeks or months and your phone seems to have sent your deal code into a black hole, then email us and we can retrieve it for you all the way up to the expiration date.

What happens if I don’t receive a text?
Sometimes carriers can be a little stubborn, so try going back in and sending again. You also have the option of printing your deal the old-fashioned way via printer. If that still isn't solving the issue, email us and we can help you out.

How To Get Involved

I haven’t seen my favorite local business featured. So where is it?
Thatʼs where we rely on you. Weʼre working with local businesses to constantly add new exciting incentives. Chances are, we'll feature your favorite spot soon. Or if youʼre really impatient, you can cut to the chase and ask that location (very nicely, please) to contact us; weʼll make things happen.
Where does local content come from?
Every morning, the local content stork flies over Scoutmob HQ, dropping off a new bundle of local love for us to share with you. When that doesnʼt happen, weʼre scouring all the best local sources for interesting tidbits and helpful nuggets to share with you. Weʼre tapping the places and people that make cities unique. The deals are our business, but the content is strictly stuff we find interesting, curious, weird, funny, awesomely awesome, or just straight up informative. And yes, all this means weʼre looking to you to help be informants. After all, youʼre a part of what makes our communities tick.
How can my awesome local business become a Scoutmob feature deal?
Easy. Head on over to Iʼm a local business!
Hey, I’m pretty interesting. How can I feature my business, art, pictures, and opinions on Scoutmob?
Weʼre all about pulling from the community to boost up the best and most interesting stuff worth knowing about. That means you are our source. Contact us to share your thoughts, pictures, suggestions, leads, story ideas, latest tattoos, hobbies, and secret family recipes. Seriously -- we consider (almost) all of it. But only if you ask nicely.

Deals via Text/Email/Not-so-Smartphone

Okay. I've looked at the email and the website, asked friends, still can't figure how to do this Scoutmob thing without the smartphone app. A little help, please?

We promise it’s easier than it sounds. Here’s how this goes down without the app:

Step One: When you see a deal in your email that you like, claim it! From the daily e-mail hit the blue "GET IT FREE" button. When you get to the website, look for another blue "GET IT FREE" button.

Step Two: A window should open up where you can select to receive the deal by text message or email. Choose your own adventure, entering either your phone number and cell phone carrier or your email address. Hit “Send” and you're done!

Step Three: Like magic, a text should appear on that nifty cellular device of yours. Unless it’s a pager. In which case, well, we really don’t really know what to say.

Step Four: When you’re ready to use a deal, head to the deal location and be ready to show the merchant/employee your discount code on either your email print-out or email screen, or the text message you received from us. Simple as that.

Step Five: Make sure you “Join the ‘Mob” on the website so that you can stay privy to all the newness that is added to the site every day.

What happens if I don’t receive a deal I claimed via email?
When in doubt, try, try again. When normal logic fails you, check your spam filter. Sometimes our emails get caught up in the noise. If all else fails, email us. We’ll do whatever we can to help you out and get you that deal code!
What if I got the deal on my phone, but I/ the deal-fairies/ Jimmy Hoffa/ my kids delete my text message code?

Well first off, that’s improbable; your kids would never do such a thing. But if your text message deal disappears off your phone for whatever reason, there are a few things you can do to retrieve it:

f that's not working or it's been a few days or weeks or months and your phone seems to have sent your deal code into a black hole, then email us and we can retrieve it for you all the way up to the expiration date.

This deal says App-Only or Pop-up. Why can’t I claim it?
We will feature a handful of app-only deals each month. It’s not that we don’t want to share the deal with all, but these deals are usually a little more tricky. Some will be available a specific times only which we can’t modify in text/email.
So you’re telling me that just because I don’t have some fancy smartphone, I can’t get in on all the extra app action? What’s up with that?

Well, first, let us say that we try to make sure almost ALL of our Scoutmob users get a fair shot at most of the action. But sometimes, our merchants are more comfortable with a limited, controlled volume of users and availability, and that’s easier for us to provide via app only offers. There’s still enough FREE (Remember? It’s free!) goodness to go around via the website, text and email offers, but some of our deals and extra features are just a better experience via mobile platform.

And if you still are mad at us, well then, we’d just like to say: Blame technology. Or this guy

Local Curation

What is this Hand-Picked thing?

Our Hand-Picked packages are highly curated experiences to do something exclusive on a first come-first-served basis. We’ve taken our local know-how to the next level and put together some packages that you can buy ahead of time and enjoy later. These will mostly be events, spa packages, classes, fixed price or special menus at restaurants... you know, all the local experiences you need to plan ahead and just don’t work via regular geo-located business. Hand-Picked are available for a limited-time only, and once they sell out, they’re gone for good, so be sure to buy a good one when you see it!

For all other questions on Hand-Picked goodness, hit us up at zookeeper@scoutmob.com

So I bought an awesome Hand-Picked creation, but I’m confused what to do with it/am having second thoughts/have fallen and can’t get up. Can you help me?
Sure can. Just contact us at zookeeper@scoutmob.com with your query and we’ll get back to you lickety-split.
How do you choose which businesses to feature?
We have some pretty strict standards around here, and all deals, content, curated experiences, etc. have to meet protocol. We’ll never feature a place we wouldn’t go to ourselves. And we stand by it, because we’ve sent our team of local scouts out there to vet the place first.

Who writes this stuff? I think I’m pretty nifty with a pen and knowledgeable about the city, can I play?

We have a pretty bad-ass team of local writers who not only get pretty witty with the keyboard, they also are the ones going to all these places to tell the stories and take the pictures. They’re coming up with and curating the articles and event lists as well. So pretty much, they’re all around local rockstars.

If you think you’re up to snuff (or just want to send us some editorial love letters), hit us up at inkslinger@scoutmob.com. We’re always looking for a few good adventurous writer types around here.

Etc., Etc.

Who are the wise guys behind this?
Who, us? We're just your average lovers of all things local. Here we are.
Is Scoutmob hiring?
Aww, shucks. You really wanna work with us? Really? Okay, head on over here: http://scoutmob.theresumator.com/apply
How do I change the city emails I’m getting?
You can unsubscribe from any unwanted emails using the ‘unsubscribe’ link at the bottom of that email. Then, sign-up for your desired city at the main homepage of Scoutmob.com. If all else fails, email us for help.
Yeah, yeah. Iʼve heard this schtick before. How is Scoutmob different from other group-buying deal sites?
Oh dear. Where do we even begin? For starters, check out our “HOW IT WORKS” page or the “ABOUT US” section at the top nav of our site. If you still think we’re just another dime-a-dozen deal site, then please email us. We’d love to explain in more colorful detail.
This page was not helpful at all. How can I ask you guys the question I really want to ask?
Eesh, tough crowd. Why donʼt you take that little question of yours and.... just email it to us here. You can actually expect an answer in a timely fashion -- weʼre pretty much glued to our computers.
You can reach us at fannypack@scoutmob.com with any questions, and we’ll get back to you as soon as possible.
