Don’t judge a book by its cover... or a bar by its neighbors. Sandwiched between some of Nashville’s busiest gift shops and tourist traps, Piranha’s Bar and Grill puts the bite back into 2nd Avenue. The keyword here is “sandwich,” because this small, locally run joint specializes in Pittsburgh-style ‘wiches that are piled high with deli meat, served on thick Italian bread and topped with seasoned fries and homemade coleslaw. It’s Yankee comfort food, served with as much southern attitude as our bellies can handle. (Which is a lot.)

Mike Hanlon began slinging his famous sandwiches in 2000, modeling the food after the cheesesteaks and corned beef subs he used to order back home in Pittsburgh. After opening a small sandwich shop in the corner of Bar Nashville, Hanlon moved Piranha's to a bigger location on 2nd Avenue, where the food is cooked up directly behind the bar, all day and night (like, waaaay into the night, which comes in handy). Along with the hours, the sandwiches are also extended. Oh, and also? Aside from the sammies, we learned not to skip out on the soup. When we stopped by the other day, the soup of the day was “vodka.” Yessir.
