1) What in tarnation is Scoutmob and what kind of name is that anyway?
Scoutmob is bringing you access to the local scene with mobile deals on local restaurants, bars, and entertainment. We also include the latest tidbits and curious finds for you to explore whatʼs happening around town. As for the name, we think of ourselves (and our followers) as local scouts. We also happen to be mobile, flashmob-ish, and tied to the mob. Minus that last part.
2) Y'know what's weird?
Pavlovian conditioning! Next question.
3) I want to get the deal. But Iʼm scared.
Well, if youʼre worried about being committed to a deal, then chill; unlike other deal sites, we donʼt require you to give us your credit card information, any cash money, or your first-born child. Ever. All we need from you is a mobile phone number where we can send the deal -- itʼs just like a virtual pinky swear that you intend to use the deal some time in the near future. And we promise to never, ever, ever spam you. See? Not so scary.
4) I sent the deal to my phone. Now what?
Run, walk, drive, pogo stick your way to the deal location, open your text when it's time to make a transaction, and let that employee see the deal. High-five excessively. Just remember that all Scoutmob deals are on a limited-time basis -- so donʼt run out of time. That would just be sad.
5) When do the deals start? How soon can I go take advantage of the deal?
No need to wait for a “go” time. As soon as a deal hits the site, it’s good for use. We’ve also been told they make for a good loofah sponge.
6) When do deals end? Do I only have until the countdown clock runs down to use the deals?
We would never cause you to miss work like that. All deals must be claimed to phone or email before the countdown clock hits zero. But all deals expire in a much longer period of time (usually three months). Check the expiration date to be sure.
7) I saw a sweet deal about a month ago. Can I get in on that?
Well Scout, the answer to that one is a big, fat... depends. Our daily deals are sent out on a daily basis. Which means you need to claim the deal on the day that it's featured. We wish we could go back and give out codes for past deals, but unfortunately the restaurants and stores we do business with wouldn’t like that very much.
However, there's one exception: if you happen to be the owner of a fancy iPhone or Android, then you have access to our free Scoutmob app. Which means you have access to all of the current Scoutmob features until they expire. The app lets you search for deals by new, expiring or nearby locations.
So if you missed out on a deal, but you want to get it, your best bet is to find or make friends with an iPhone or Android owner. Sure, this may be considered “using” your friend, but perhaps if you barter some form of servitude, they’ll be willing to share. Or you know, maybe they were just looking for a friend to go use the deal with, too. In which case, the using of your friendship is mutual. Problem solved.
8) I sent the deal to my email but I don't see it in my inbox. What next?
Relax Scout, we won't leave you hanging. Breathe deeply - into a paper bag if you need it - and we’ll work through this together. First, calmly check your spam folder (especially if you have a Yahoo email address) and see if your deal email was sent there. If it's not there, then continue taking deep, slow breaths and shoot us an
email. We can make sure your deal isn’t lost out in the interweb wilderness for too long.
9) What if I have a question about today's deal?
We suggest you take any questions you have about a particular deal straight to that business. All contact information along with the general information about the deal is listed in the daily write-up. Beyond that, the business can probably answer your more specific questions. If not, you know you always have us
here.
10) What if I get stung by a jellyfish?
Another good question. You may just have to pee on it. That should take the bite out of the sting, but then again, this means you’ll also be drenched in pee. Next question.
11) Why only one deal a day?
Weʼre all about giving you an option, every day, to get out and do more. Scoutmob cities can be pretty overwhelming as it is -- so we aim to keep our deal-focus narrow, featuring one really cool thing to try each day. Maybe you donʼt like the deal today - fine. We promise weʼll be back tomorrow with a different, hard-to-pass-up offer.
12) Where do you find these deals?
We work directly with local businesses to bring you exclusive deals only available through Scoutmob. Unlike other services, we're not a "coupon aggregator” -- these deals are specific to our market and to our lucky followers.
13) Can I combine my Scoutmob deal with other offers or specials?
Not unless we say so.
14) Ok I've looked at the email, looked at the website, asked a friend and I still can't work out how to do this Scoutmob thing. Help me!
In all seriousness, it’s really pretty simple once you get the hang of it. So let’s get you started.
Step One: Join the mob. No, not that mob. We mean join Scoutmob by signing up on our site. Look for the "Join the Mob" box, enter your email and you'll be on the list to receive our daily emails which also include local goodness along with your sweet, sweet deal.
Step Two: When you see a deal in your email that you like, claim it! From the daily e-mail hit the "see the deal" button.
Step Three: When you get to the website, look for the yellow "get it free" button.
Step Four: A window should open up where you can enter your phone number and cell phone carrier. Hit “Send” and you're done! Like magic, a text should appear on that nifty cellular device of yours. Unless it’s a pager. In which case, well, we really don’t know what to say....
Alternative Step Four: If you'd like to get your deal by email, look just below the big blue "SEND IT" button. There is an envelope icon for you to click on which will let you enter your email deets and, from there, we’ll send the deal straight to your inbox. Print and enjoy.
Step Five: If you’re seated at your desk chair when receiving your deal, jump up and around! If you’re already jumping around when receiving your deal, then start walking like an Egyptian. And if you’re already walking like an Egyptian, then... dude, you definitely don’t need any of us telling you what to do.
15) But I'm a smart-phone snob. Don't I get some extra perks?
Ahh, yes... the free Scoutmob App is available for your special kind. Get the skinny on that
here.
16) How do I change my city on the app?
On both the iPhone and Android, your home city is listed in your "Info" tab. So head on down to that tab on the bottom nav bar and choose from the cities there. If you just want to view another city's deals and you're sporting the iPhone model, click "Cities" at the top left of the "Deals" tab where you can switch back and forth between cities until your thumbs get tired. And if you have an Android? Just hit that Menu button of yours and choose "Change city" and go to town. Pun intended.
As of right now, Scoutmob is serving up deals to the people of Atlanta, New York City, San Francisco, Washington DC, Seattle, Portland, Los Angeles, Denver, Austin, Dallas, Chicago, Boston, and Nashville. But we promise we're making moves for total world domination quite soon. So spread the word to all your friends in any Scoutmob-deprived city. The next cities we go to will be based upon which needs us the most. Sign up here and request Scoutmob to come to your city.
17) Can I use my iPod Touch for the Scoutmob app?
The best answer is yes AND no!
Yes you can access the App Store and download the Scoutmob app. You may even be able to use some of the deals, but you will need Wi-Fi connectivity to use any of the deals. The Scoutmob team suggests that you still text or email your favorite deals to yourself because there is no way to guarantee that you'll have a Wi-Fi connection at the time that you want to use the deal.
18) Deals via phone? Why phone?
Because these days, like it or not, you're always with it. We figure you might as well have your convenient awesome deals right there in your pocket. And, with the magic of mobile, you donʼt have to wait for a deal via snail mail, carrier pigeon, or even your printer. It's all right there as soon as you decide you want it. So yes, you hippie, weʼre also green!
19) What if I/ the deal-fairies/ Jimmy Hoffa/ my kids delete my text message deal?
Well first off, that’s improbable; your kids would never do such a thing. But if your text message deal disappears off your phone for whatever reason, there are a few things you can do to retrieve it:
- If you lose the deal on the same day that the deal is featured, you can try to re-send the deal to your phone or try sending it to your email.
- If that's not working or it's been a few days or weeks or months and your phone seems to have sent your deal code into a black hole, then email us and we can retrieve it for you all the way up to the expiration date.
20) What happens if I don’t receive a text?
Sometimes carriers can be a little stubborn, so try going back in and sending again. You also have the option of printing your deal the old-fashioned way via printer. If that still isn't solving the issue,
email us and we can help you out.
21) No fair! I want something extra on my Palm/Windows Mobile/Zack Morris phone!
Sorry, Preppy. While those are all fine devices for communication, weʼre taking it one step at a time and focusing on the iPhone, Android, and BlackBerry for now. Once thatʼs all well and good, we might just turn our attention to other platforms.
22) I tried to use a coupon, but the cashier wouldn't accept it. What do I do?
We do everything in our power to make sure this never happens. That said, thereʼs always the chance that some wires donʼt connect or an employee can't figure how to handle this new-fangled coupon contraption. If thatʼs the case, we recommend you speak with a manager who is familiar with Scoutmob. Or
contact us directly and weʼll straighten people out.
23) I haven’t seen my favorite local business featured. So where is it?
Thatʼs where we rely on you. Weʼre working with local businesses to constantly add new exciting incentives. Chances are, we'll feature your favorite spot soon. Or if youʼre really impatient, you can cut to the chase and ask that location (very nicely, please) to
contact us; weʼll make things happen.
24) Where does local content come from?
Every morning, the local content stork flies over Scoutmob HQ, dropping off a new bundle of local love for us to share with you. When that doesnʼt happen, weʼre scouring all the best local sources for interesting tidbits and helpful nuggets to share with you. Weʼre tapping the places and people that make cities unique. The deals are our business, but the content is strictly stuff we find interesting, curious, weird, funny, awesomely awesome, or just straight up informative. And yes, all this means weʼre looking to you to help be informants. After all, youʼre a part of what makes our communities tick.
25) How can my awesome local business become a Scoutmob feature deal?
26) Hey, I’m pretty interesting. How can I feature my business, art, pictures, and opinions on Scoutmob?
Weʼre all about pulling from the community to boost up the best and most interesting stuff worth knowing about. That means you are our source.
Contact us to share your thoughts, pictures, suggestions, leads, story ideas, latest tattoos, hobbies, and secret family recipes. Seriously -- we consider (almost) all of it. But only if you ask nicely.
27) Who are the wise guys behind this?
Who, us? We're just your average lovers of all things local.
Here we are.
28) Can I use Scoutmob deals or the Scoutmob app in any city?
Negative, Ghostrider. Scoutmob is only useful to people frequenting the fine businesses of Atlanta, New York City, San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, Los Angeles, Denver, Austin, Dallas, Chicago, Boston, Washington DC, and Nashville for now. Therefore, our app is pretty much like foreign currency in any other city: cool to look at, but otherwise, pretty useless. Though, hey, we like where your head's at.
29) Yeah, yeah. Iʼve heard this schtick before. How is Scoutmob different from other group-buying deal sites?
Well, you skeptic, weʼre different on a few levels. Like group-buying sites, we're providing hard-to-pass-up deals on nearby businesses and getting the word out through email. The difference? Our deals are mobile-based -- meaning you take advantage of them via mobile phone and get them much easier than other deal sites allow. There are no upfront commitments or pre-paying via credit card. And finally, we only bring you deals from places locals actually go. We're all about local businesses that feature premium value rather than straight discounts.
30) This page was not helpful at all. How can I ask you guys the question I really want to ask?
Well, why donʼt you take that little question of yours and.... just email it to us
here. And you can actually expect an answer in a timely fashion -- weʼre pretty much glued to our computers.
