The East Village's homegrown favorite expands to a new location.

The Bean has been holding it down in the East Village for over a decade, and their cozy, polished new incarnation on 1st Ave is the neighborhood's latest argument against bland corporate coffee. With beautiful dark wood floors, exposed brick and seating for anyone who needs a caffeine infusion or a spot to study, The Bean continues to be a reminder that the coffee house should be the cornerstone of a community. The staff knows the regulars, the regulars know one another; newcomers (and dogs!) are welcomed with a smile, free WiFi, and a place that feels instantly like home base. Even better (if you can believe it) is the expansive menu of coffee drinks, sandwiches, and desserts, including vegan sweets, cupcakes, and an array of twisted Rice Krispie treats made from all other sorts of cereal. I'm not sure why no one else has thought of that, but that's The Bean for you: they're on the cutting edge of comfort and joy.
