The best place for Mexican? Just north of Little Italy. If anything can make you feel close to the beach while surrounded by pavement, it's Pinche Taqueria; there's just something about the fish tacos and breezy patio that suggests Baja. A downtown fixture for the better part of a decade, Pinche does a simple thing very, very well: fresh, authentic Mexican food (ie, the stuff you'd get if you were actually near the shore, south of the border.) You can get great breakfast burritos and serious combo platters if you're so inclined, but the simplest dishes here are the most magical. The beer-battered fish tacos alone are responsible for hundreds of Pinche devotees, but the charbroiled chicken and spit-grilled pork hold their own in the battle to be the best. Everything's priced to encourage obsessive amounts of return visits, which is handy, as there's no way to have the food here and walk away for good. Especially once you've seen what happens when you add a round of margaritas. (Spoiler alert: it's epic.)
