Hey, smell that? It’s the aroma wafting in from 31st Avenue in Astoria. Nestled in the ethnically diverse enclave, Aroma 31 stuffs both your stomach and soul with a mix of culturally-inspired dishes from Greece, Italy, and the Mediterranean. Owner Jimmy Karalis poached the talented Chef Franco Pollini to craft the menu from scratch, incorporating notes from his own childhood. Indeed, many of the dishes were influenced by the home cooking of Pollinia's grandmother: the Shaved Fennel & Oranges offers a unique twist on a traditional salad, and comes lightly seasoned with a dash of extra virgin olive oil and a sprinkling of sea salt. Chilled poached shrimp with a side of seasonal veggies is a sophisticated take on a classic main dish. For the finale, we can't stress enough the goodness of the Seared Diver Scallop Muniere. Voluminous bites of the deep sea morsels are served over a bed of creamy orzo, their texture offset by a pairing of ripe cherry tomatoes. Sound good to you? It tastes great to us.
