Capizzi in Hell's Kitchen has to be one of the best places to escape the bustle of the city. This traditional pizzeria and wine bar has the warmth and homemade taste of a meal at grandma's. (If your nona was from Italy.)Hell's Kitchen's Capizzi has to be one of the best places to warm up as the days get chillier. Flames flicker in the wood-burning oven at the back of this pizzeria and wine bar while the old-world atmosphere and friendly staff welcome you in. Owner Joseph Calcagno invites patrons to step off of bustling 9th Avenue and into the traditions of his grandmother's house. Everything at Capizzi, named for a small town in Sicily, is made with the same care that his parents and grandparents took for years. Like his Nonna, Calcagno insists on using the best, freshest ingredients for every meal. You'll taste his years of experience shopping around Brooklyn for the most succulent sausage or the most fragrant herbs. Try the "Loaded" Pizza for a good sampling of it all, with provolone cheese, pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, onions, roasted peppers, whole roasted garlic and fresh basil. You can also build your own pie from the list of 14 enticing toppings. (Caramelized fennel, anyone?) As you munch on your favorite slice, stay warmed up with the blend of crushed red pepper and oregano, dried and handmade in-house. (Your tastebuds will be feeling the heat!) Then you'll want to stick around for another glass of red—no need to go back outside yet!
