Coffee is a form of art in our book, so we fuel up with a cup of brew at Au Breve. With locally made baked goods, inventive tea flavors and just about every brewing method imaginable, coffee is a serious craft at this museum-quality shop.A good side hustle is always a smart thing to have outside of your day job. It keeps things interesting. Us? We've been known to slang a few drinks come nightfall. And we're not alone. A side hustle for one espresso-loving real estate mogul is Au Breve Espresso on the ground floor of the new Cooper Union building in Cooper Square. Fitting the architectural awesomeness of the space, Au Breve is all pristine white walls, shiny metal surfaces and abstract angles that make for a museum-like coffee-going experience. Which is fitting since it's pretty much a shrine to all things local, fair trade and organic up in here.
From brewing Dallis Brothers coffee to the seasonal sandwiches made daily on-site, Au Breve keeps it in the 'hood as much as possible. They also happen to keep it 100 percent kosher (sorry, no business on Saturdays). But since any other time is a great time for iced drinks, pop in for inventive iced tea blends, like mojito mint green tea or blueberry hibiscus. We also loved the Japanese style cold brew coffee, which yields a more aromatic cup of java than a traditional cold brew. But there's nothing wrong with sticking to the classics—every shot pulled is done so with the utmost attention paid to quality and execution (we watched two or three shots pulled and inspected before we were handed our latte). And? Totally worth it.
