With creative twists on classic sushi rolls, Amber has shaken us from our tired old sushi routine. Try the Red Hot Dragon or the Sangria Crispy Duck and you'll never look at raw fish the same way again. If, like us, you know your order before you even walk in to any given sushi bar in New York, then you know that going out for the raw can get a little routine. Since we have decent Japanese spots on nearly every block, it's often difficult to find a reason to venture beyond one's own neighborhood for a quick sushi hit. Luckily, we happened upon Amber in Kips Bay recently, which ignited not only our sense of discovery in an uncharted 'hood, but also our sense of adventure in ordering. Since the day it opened, Amber has been winning hearts with its ultra-fresh and inventive special rolls, each of which deserves a slot in your regular sushi rotation. Try swapping out your favorite hand roll for a Red Hot Dragon (spicy crunchy tuna on top of a tuna avocado roll) or a Dragon's Bride (spicy shrimp tempura and cucumber roll topped with black & red caviar). Once you've picked the last piece off of your plate, you'll say goodbye forever to your old, standard sushi ways. If you're in the mood for something less raw, the menu also offers up an extensive list of dishes from its grill and wok, ranging from Sangria Crispy Duck to Filet Mignon in a black pepper sauce.
With an ultra luxe dining room that features a wall of mahjong tiles in the entryway and glass windows that open up onto the street for great people watching, Amber is our new go-to when we need to break with our old routines.
