The menu at Gente is a mouth-watering trip down the Italian coast, inspired by over 100 trips taken by the owner and chef. Don't pass up the Risotto Milanese with mushrooms and saffron, and be sure to say hi to Sophia Loren for us.While looking through photos of other people's vacation might be one of the most painful experiences around, re-living other people's vacations through the food they sampled is a completely different story. So when Jay Mitchell, owner and executive chef of Gente in Midtown, invited us to try his menu inspired by over 100 trips to Italy, we didn't hesitate to say yes.
Gente (meaning people) operates under the three P's principle: People, Pasta and Pleasure. All are noble causes, but it's that second P that we were really hooked by. Their list of pasta dishes reads like a Tuscan grandmother's recipe book, and we can only imagine tastes just as delicious. Go for the Spaghetti con Pesto e Fagiolini for classic Italian flavor, or one of Jay's personal favorites, the Risotto Milanese with sauteed mushrooms and saffron. In true NYC fashion, you'll dine with stars like Marilyn Monroe and Sophia Loren as they gaze down on you from large black and white portraits on the wall. The quaint yet spacious dining room is flooded with light and makes a perfect spot for business lunch, a casual meal or an impromptu trip to the Italian coast.
